What speeds can I expect from G.fast?

G.fast delivers some of the fastest broadband speeds available in Canberra, but your actual sync speed will vary depending on the length of the copper cable between the nearest Vision Network node and your premises. This is called your drop length and it is the single biggest factor in determining what your connection will achieve.

Based on our observed data across 57 Canberra suburbs, here is a practical guide to what you can expect:

Expected speeds by drop length

Drop lengthExpected downstream speed
Under 100mNear-gigabit. Many connections reach 1,000 Mbps or above.
100–150mStrong performance, typically 700–850 Mbps.
150–200m500–650 Mbps, comparable to or better than nbn 500 FTTP plans.
200–250m350–450 Mbps, comfortable for multi-device households.
250–300m280–350 Mbps, still well above what nbn FTTC or FTTN can offer.
300m+Around 270–300 Mbps. Solid broadband that outperforms most nbn connections in Australia.

Upload speeds

Our network-wide average upload sync is 90 Mbps, with connections under 100m commonly reaching the 115 Mbps profile cap. For context, nbn 500 FTTP plans offer just 50 Mbps upload. G.fast upload speeds are strong at virtually every drop length.

Other factors that can affect your speed

Drop length is not the only variable. The following can also influence your sync speed:

  • Internal wiring quality — old or degraded wiring between the first telephone socket and the NTU can reduce performance.
  • NTU placement — the NTU should connect as directly as possible to the first socket, avoiding extension cables or splitters.
  • Electrical interference — solar inverters, air conditioning units, and poor electrical cabling can all impact sync speeds at higher G.fast frequencies.
